Scenario tab

This tab contains controls that alter properties related to a Scenario as a whole.

Name: Enter the name of your scenario in this text box and click Enter. This scenario name appears in the title bar when the application is in Builder mode and when it is in Player mode.

Start Date: Scenarios can have a start and finish time and date. When a scenario that has time properties is first opened, the current time and date in the scenario is set to the start time and date. If the scenario user then performs an action which has a time duration associated with it, the current time and date will be increased appropriately. If the current time and date reaches a predetermined time limit the scenario will end with a time expired message.

Note: Start date allows you to set the start time and date for a scenario, this value is not related to real time, it is "scenario time".

Deadline: Allows you to set the virtual deadline time and date for your scenario. A drop down menu enables you to set the future deadline date - you can then change the time if you wish within the Deadline entry box.

Deadline Reset Button: Sets your deadline date to be the same as your start date, this has the effect of giving your scenario no deadline.

Deadline safety margin: You can set the number of minutes when a warning is given before the deadline is reached. The warning says "Performing this action puts you close to your deadline date, continue?" The scenario user can then choose to continue with the action or not.

Deadline safety margin Reset Button: Resets the deadline safety margin

Budget: You can set a monetary budget that the users of your scenario can spend in traveling to different locations, purchasing items and taking certain actions. Enter a value in this text box to indicate the amount of virtual money available to the player of the scenario. The cost of different actions associated with a scenario are entered via the Monetary cost text box on the Actions tab on the Properties panel.

Budget Reset Button: This resets your budget to zero., this has the effect of removing budget restrictions completely.

Budget safety margin: The amount at which a warning is given before the budget is exceeded.

Budget safety margin Reset Button: Resets the budget safety margin

Warn user of final tasks: If this box is ticked, a warning will be given to the user that a final task is about to be performed. The warning states "This is a final task, your scenario will end if you complete this task, do you wish to continue?". The user can then choose to continue or not.

Exceeded budget message: The default message that appears when the user exceeds the budget is " You have exceeded the budget.". You can keep or replace the default message.

Exceeded deadline message: You can keep or replace the default message - "You have exceeded the deadline" - that appears when the scenario user exceeds the set deadline for the scenario.

Show link to debrief: You can choose when the link to the debrief appears to the scenario user by clicking on one or more of the tick boxes shown - that is, when over budget, when over deadline and/or when final action performed.

If any of these events occur, the user will see an end of scenario message, with a link to Debrief page.

The Debriefing message needs to be set using the “edit debrief” icon in the content editor (df)

Initial Location Map: The SBLi Builder allows you to create nested locations - that is, different rooms in a house or office; different buildings on a farm, or different geographical zones within a region. When the scenario opens up in the player, these nested locations will not be in view; they only appear when you visit the primary location - the house or the office or the farm.

To create nested locations, you need to create a location map. To illustrate the process, let's go through an example scenario which involves visiting several locations, including a patient's home, a doctor's office and a hospital. When the hospital is visited, we then want two locations to be available within the hospital - a ward office and the patient's bed. Note that when we have set up a Location map for the hospital, when a user clicks on the hospital icon, the location window will immediately switch to being in the hospital, showing icons for the ward office and the patient's bed. Because of this, you should not enter information associated with the hospital icon since it simply acts as a portal and any information entered will not be visible.

To start building this scenario, open up the SBLi Builder. Now let's enter three locations - Patient's home, Doctor's office and Hospital. Note that the "Current view" shown on the horizontal bar below the Location window is "General Locations, followed by the location that you have currently selected and that is highlighted.

When a user starts to play the scenario, we want the Doctor's office to be highlighted first. To make this happen, select the Location Map tab. It will show "General Locations" in the Name box. Below that, from the drop down menu, select "Doctor's office" as the initial location.

Next, click on the Scenario tab on the Properties Panel. At the bottom of this panel is Location maps Click on the "Add a Location Map" button (it is a button with a plus sign on it). In the Location Map name box, delete the default name "General Locations" and type in "In Hospital".

Now click on the Hospital icon in the Location window and then click on the Location tab on the Properties panel. Hospital will appear in the Name box. Beneath this box, click in the check box "Use as location map portal" and, in the drop down menu below that, click on "In Hospital".

If you click again on the Hospital icon in the Location window, the Location window becomes blank and the Current view now shows "In Hospital". Here we can add two locations that are nested in the Hospital location, "Ward office" and "Patient's bed", and add information about these locations in the Environment window, Content window and Actions window.

Now reset the state of the scenario (Scenario>>Reset State) and select the Player mode (Settings>>Mode>>Player mode). If you click on the hospital icon, you immediately move to the Current view - In Hospital and the two locations - Ward office and Patient's bed now appear. Again, you can set the order in which these locations are visited by clicking on the Location Map tab and selecting either Ward office or Patient's bed as the initial location selected.

Having visited the ward office and the patient in bed, we now want to be able to return to other locations in the scenario. To do this, create another location in the hospital called "Exit hospital". Click on the Location tab and for "Exit hospital" check "Use a location map portal" and select general locations. Now click on the "Exit hospital" icon and you will return to the original "General Locations" Location map.
